Fair Dedication

The 11th Birding Fair at Jaipur's Man Sagar Lake was held on 8 and 9 February 2008. It was dedicated to “Peacock”, the National Bird of India, which is facing precarious time for its survival due to poaching (for feathers and meat), and the impact of pesticides over its feed. The Publication marking the Fair describes Pheasants in India and the measures being taken to conserve Man Sagar Lake.

The 12th Birding Fair was held during February 2009. It was dedicated to ‘communities in conservation’ and the publication focused on such people. Dr. Rajkumari Jones and Dr. Tom Jones participated in the Fair and interacted with the large number of participants. Mr. N.R. Kothari and his wife, Mrs. Anila Kothari, both representing JMRPL, the private company sharing conservation of this Lake, took the lead. Mr. Bharat Singh, an avid bird watcher and Minister in Rajasthan Government, joined the event.

All these felicitated Mr. Ramana Athreya, offering him a shawl and “Pakshee-Shree” Award for having discovered a new bird species for science in 2006 in Eaglenest Sanctuary, which was called Bugan Liocichla, named after the Bugan community of that region! The Fair’s theme getting highlighted! Mr. Ramana gave a presentation about Birds of Eaglenest Sanctuary and involvement of the Bugan community in eco-tourism.

The 13th Fair? The organizers would greatly welcome your suggestions and input about the forthcoming event during winter of 2009-10 at Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur. The Fair is now a prestigious annual event in the Indian calendar for all those who share a deep concern for the environment and wildlife. A publication will be brought out to mark the next Fair and contributors and sponsors shall be gratefully acknowledged.
